Understanding and Treating Ankle and Foot Pain: Common Injuries Explored

Foot and ankle pain are very common, particularly in people who are active, on their feet for long periods, or involved in sport. Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries, accounting for up to 25% of all sports-related injuries.

The majority of foot and ankle complaints we see clinically involve ligament sprains and plantar fascia irritation.

Ligament Sprains (Ankle Sprains)

Ligaments support the ankle joint and help control movement. When the ankle rolls or twists suddenly, these ligaments can become stretched or torn.

Typical symptoms:

  • Pain around the ankle, especially after rolling or twisting

  • Swelling or bruising

  • Pain when walking or weight-bearing

  • Feeling of instability in the ankle

Ligament sprains are commonly linked to sporting injuries, uneven surfaces, sudden changes in direction, or missteps during walking or running.

Plantar Fascia Irritation

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot that supports the arch. Repetitive loading can cause irritation and inflammation.

Typical symptoms:

  • Pain under the heel or arch

  • Sharp pain with the first steps in the morning

  • Pain after long periods standing or walking

  • Tightness through the sole of the foot

Plantar fascia irritation is often related to prolonged standing, increased walking or running, poor footwear, or reduced foot strength.
